A novel mounting device for attaching intracranial probes to the skull for use in experimental research models.

A simple mount capable of securely holding a variety of intracranial probes to the skull was constructed from commonly available clinical consumables. Using this device the cerebral cortical blood flow of preterm lambs was measured using a laser Doppler flow probe, and cerebral pH and cortical electrical impedance were measured in newborn piglets using pH electrodes and Ag/AgCl wire electrodes....

Anatomically shaped cranial collimation (ACC) for lateral cephalometric radiography: a technical report

Lateral cephalograms in orthodontic practice display an area cranial of the base of the skull that is not required for diagnostic evaluation. Attempts have been made to reduce the radiation dose to the patient using collimators combining the shielding of the areas above the base of the skull and below the mandible. These so-called "wedge-shaped" collimators have not become standard equipment in...

Assessment of Image Distortion from Head Rotation in Lateral Cephalometry

BACKGROUND The patient's head can be slightly rotated sagitally vertically or transversely within the head holding device. Because of such improper positions due to the head rotation, an error can occur in cephalometric measurements. The purpose of this study was to identify the potential projection errors of lateral cephalometric radiograph due to head rotation toward X-ray film in the vertica...

Cephalometric correction factors for bite opening--a dry skull study.

The lateral cephalometric radiograph supplies the clinician with valuable information regarding the facial skeletal morphology of the patient, provided that it is taken correctly. These radiographs should be taken while the patient is occluding in maximum intercuspation, failing which the exposure is often repeated, leading to an increase in patient radiation dose as well as added cost in time ...

A cephalometric method to diagnosis the craniovertebral junction abnormalities in osteogenesis imperfecta patients

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary bone fragility disorder that in most patients is caused by mutations affecting collagen type I. Their typical oral and craneofacial characteristics (Dentinogenesis imperfecta type I and class III malocclusion), involve the dentist in the multidisciplinary team that treat these patients. It is usual to perform lateral skull radiographs for the orthodo...
